What Causes Bad Breath

What exactly are the causes of bad breath?  There are various causes some of which we review below in this article.

The causes include the following:
- bad breath in the mornings
- bad breath after eating a meal
- bad breath from cigarettes or cigars
- chronic bad breath
- bacterium present in the mouth
- certain oral hygiene products

A case of bad breath can affect both your personal and professional life. It is an embarassing subject that most people would not want to talk to you about. You may probably only learn about it indirectly due to people talking about it behind your back. Even your friends won't talk to you about it, only perhaps a family member may be brave enough to alert you to your condition.

Bad breath in the morning is probably the most common cause of  bad breath. It is at its worst first thing when you wake up but may subside as the day wears on. Even if you brush your teeth this may only cause the problem to disappear for a few hours but as the day wears on your bad breath may return and get progressively worse. It may be so bad that other people with whom you deal cringe.

Another cause of bad breath comes from eating certain meals. This is a situational cause rather than any real medical problem in that certain meals are causing the problem. If you eat meals with a garlic  or onion content/ingredients  this may be the cause of your bad breath. Also if you smoke cigarettes or cigars or consume alcoholic bevereges this may bring on halitosis or bad breath.

Some people try to relieve or mask bad breath by chewing gums, using sprays or other types of breath fresheners to deal with their bad breath. However, even if you use breath fresheners, if the underlying cause of your bad breath is poor dental hygiene or certain foods items that you have eaten, they wont last very long in masking the odors.

Those who suffer bad breath cause that is chronic have the worst case of halitosis.  Chronic bad breath is characterized by a persistent fetid odor that emanates from your mouth and/or nose.  Most who suffer with chronic bad breath have excellent oral hygiene and don’t know what to do about their condition.

The most common cause of bad breath is from a bacterium that is naturally present in your mouth that is feeding off the food particles that is left over from when you last ate.  There are many ways you can fight the effects of this.  One way is using a good toothbrush that will get in between teeth.  Many people neglect the inside of their teeth as well as their back teeth when they are brushing.

You should be sure that you brush your teeth for five minutes or more.  Any less time and you are not reaching all the places in your mouth that will be a bad breath cause.    You need to be aware that all toothpastes and mouthwashes are not created equal too.

There are some products used for oral hygiene which exacerbate the problem rather than helping to cure it.  However,if you use products that have baking soda and peroxide as their main ingredients you will notice the benefits.  These two products can help bad breath cause and allow you to feel more confident when you are having face to face conversations with other people for example colleagues or someone you wish to get closer to.
